As our founder, Kristen Caminiti said, "We are thrilled to partner with AACPL to further our mission of fostering kindness in children and spreading kindness in communities. We have worked closely with our libraries toward this mission for years and are grateful for this opportunity. We know how important reading is for the success of all children. Reading builds confidence and expands a child's world. Books are wonderful tools that help us celebrate diversity and spread kindness. We are especially thrilled to highlight the amazing work of some of our local Kid Kindness Grant winners who are truly changing the world and their community one kind act at a time. We hope everyone who learns about their work will be inspired to do the same."

There are so many ways to celebrate differences! Doing so helps everyone to feel proud all year long. The ideas in this post are just a few ideas to get you started. It is important to start somewhere because we know that there are certain groups of people who have experienced and continue to experience bullying, discrimination, and ridicule at a higher rate than others. The LGBTQ+ community is one of those groups. They deserve to be celebrated and loved all year long, and we can all do our part to help them feel that way!

Kindness Grows Here (KGH) commits to doing its part to address gun violence in America.

Kindness Grows Here (KGH) started because our founder, Kristen, looked around at a world full of so much hate, and she wanted to do something to make a difference. While she didn’t set out to start a nonprofit–initially she just sought to spread kindness as far and wide as she could with her kids–KGH has grown into something with tremendous impact.

The simple acts of Kindness that Kristen, her husband Matt, and their children carried out inspired people and eventually grew into what is now Kindness Grows Here–a non-profit organization that has impacted 26 states and 4 countries and has empowered thousands of children throughout the United States with the knowledge and resources to be KINDER (kind, inclusive, noble, dependable, empathic, & resilient) human beings.

In light of the recent mass shootings in this country it is clear that we need kindness more than ever. We need to raise people who would never ever think of hurting anyone else. And we need to raise sensitive, caring individuals who will grow to be leaders and politicians who will unequivocally put children and people before guns.

Solving the problem of violence in America will take an “all hands on deck approach.” We need more comprehensive gun control. We need to better care for people living in poverty. We need to address racism head on. We need better mental health care. We need to address the epidemic of substance use disorders. We need to speak out against toxic masculinity. And we need to instill in children, all children, a determination and desire to be kind.

No single organization can do it alone. We commit to doing our part. We stand united with all of the individuals and organizations working together to address the multipronged problem of gun violence in America.

Welcome to this month's Kind Kid Spotlight! We are so excited for you to meet Erin Scott, a senior at Arundel High School, embracing the role of giving back to others through kindness and love. Erin's heart is bursting with ideas on how to spread kindness to others and she even encouraged her entire school community to join her for a special campaign. Ms. Stawas, an administrator at Arundel High School, shared Erin's story with us! Beautiful work, Erin!

e illness that left him going in and out of hospitals frequently his whole life. Watching him go through this experience where he spent so much time in and out of hospitals and missing out on typical childhood events, Erin had the idea to start a charity inspired by him. She wanted to give other children like her brother the opportunity to feel a little less scared and stressed while at the hospital and provide them with a sense of comfort. Erin started “A Sister’s Love” seven years ago, and she has delivered creative care packages to some of the local hospitals including Johns Hopkins, University Of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, along with Children’s Hospital (where her brother spent a lot of time). But the amazing part about Erin's mission is that she has taught so many other students to be empathetic and to join her cause. Most recently, she launched a campaign at Arundel High School to collect play dough for Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital. She called in "Play Doh for Dough." She created lessons with which she taught the whole school about PCD and also how Play Doh can be more than a toy but also a stress relieving tool for hospitalized children. Then she created a competition for classes to collect Play Doh. The classes who collected the most Play Doh won a pizza party (the dough). Erin's goal was to collect 500 cans of Play Doh. She exceeded her goal by collecting over 3,400 cans of Play Doh. The Child Life Specialists at Johns Hopkins were so amazed by not only the generous donation but also her ability to ignite and educate a whole school to support her cause. I'm confident that Erin has inspired and paved the way for future kindness changemakers at Arundel and we can't wait to see the next act of kindness blossom all because of Erin!

Three cheers to Crofton High School's Unified Bocce Team for their many accomplishments during their 2022 season. The team spread kindness and promoted inclusion throughout the season. Students involved went above and beyond to help and include others, both on their team and the opposing teams.

They volunteered their time at events such as the AACPS Unified Bocce County Championship and the Special Olympics Unified Bocce State Championship tournament on May 24th. 2022. The season also brought a special recognition, the Craig T. White Sportsmanship Award.

As the founder of an organization dedicated to fostering kindness in children, this is a topic about which I have thought A LOT. When I decided that spreading kindness as far and wide as possible would be my mission, I did not embark on that mission without doing a lot of soul searching about what it really means to be kind.

When I give presentations to students, parents, or teachers, I talk about the difference between being “kind” and being “nice.”

           "Be The CHANGE..

We won’t see change and inspire people to think twice about their words and actions by using disrespectful, condescending, or hateful words to confront wrongdoing. If we are to inspire change, we must be the change. We must demonstrate how to respond to unkind behavior by ourselves being kind. Standing up with kindness can be firm. It can sometimes be loud. And it can even be hard to hear…because sometimes the truth hurts. But kindness is always respectful.

Kindness is a high moral standard. It is living a life that strives to always do what is right. It is understanding the impact our words and actions have on others (regardless of our intent). Kindness is a constant goal. It is not something to be conquered. Instead it is a life’s work. It is apologizing when we fail and it is committing to do better. Kindness is understanding that we are all human, and thus kindness is also forgiving others when they fail at being kind, but also being clear that forgiveness comes with an expectation to do better next time.

Kindness isn’t always easy. Sometimes it can be messy. Sometimes it can be scary. But it is always the right thing to do.

Studies have shown that helping children develop empathy is one of the greatest tools in raising them to be kind, good citizens of the world. To this aim, Kindness Grows Here has created the “What I Wish They Knew” project to help others learn how people have triumphed in the face of adversity. We are looking for personal stories from those who faced and overcame adversity with the goal of sharing these stories so others can learn from and be inspired by them. Triumph is not merely defined as a grand accomplishment. Triumph can be as simple as being able to move forward, being able to love oneself despite adversity, being able to stand firm in what you believe, and being willing to bravely share your story with others. We are looking for stories from those who have experienced racism, discrimination, bullying, or some other form of intolerance by others.

We will be combining the stories into a document that will be available online for parents, teachers, coaches, and other adults to utilize in working with children to teach empathy and understanding, and to help children understand the impact their words and actions have on others. As funds become available, we also plan to print hard copies of this resource that we will donate to schools and other organizations supporting children.

Talking to Children about Race

In June of 2020 Anne Arundel County Public Schools and Kindness Grows Here Co-Sponsored a virtual forum to help adults talk to children about issues surrounding race.

The forum featured six parents of elementary school students who shared their experiences and perspectives about talking with their children about these often-difficult issues.

If you weren’t able to tune in, you can watch it here:

Later in the summer we were thrilled when the Anne Arundel County Public Library asked us to do a “Part 2” of this discussion. Below is that discussion:

There was much to discuss. These conversation by no means covered every topic. And we didn’t have all the answers. But it is in having the conversation that we all learn. We hope these events helped parents feel more comfortable having conversations about race with their children.

There are so many amazing charities out there that you can consider donating to. But here’s why we think you should donate to Kindness Grows Here:

We are a grass roots organization. We have a dedicated Board of Directors with a vast array of skills who all support our mission with their time and money. We have no paid staff. Every penny you donate goes right back out into communities all over the United States to help kindness grow.

We are small, and young, but mighty! In 2018 we started our Kid Kindness Grant program. That year we gave out $2,250 to 12 grant recipients in 3 States and 2 Countries. In 2019 we have more than tripled the amount we are giving! This year $7,250 will fund 29 grants in 6 States! We are helping kindness to grow from coast to coast in the United States and in Canada! In just over 2 years, through our three primary programs (school assemblies, public events, and Kid Kindness Grants) we have directly impacted 10,900 children and parents!

New research shows us that kindness not only makes us feel good, but it affects our health in truly tremendous ways. Kindness is helping people to live longer, happier, and healthier lives. Kindness Grows Here’s priority is children. If we can teach children the art of being kind, we will be helping them to live better lives. Your donation will make this possible.

Our communities need more kindness! In a world where incidents of hate and bias are on the rise, we need to inspire children to realize that kindness is a super power and that one aspect of being kind is standing up respectfully when people are unkind. Our school assemblies and free public events seek to help kids think about how they can be kind in all aspects of their lives: at home, in school, and in their communities. Our Kid Kindness Grants are empowering kids to change the world one kind act at a time. You can help us to continue doing this with your donation!

At Kindness Grows Here we believe that empathy and understanding are key to raising children to be kind and inclusive. We believe in celebrating everyone’s differences. This month, in honor of Autism Acceptance, Awareness, & Action Month we will be focusing on Autism.

While we are not experts on Autism, we want to do our part to provide parents with resources they can use to educate themselves and their children about Autism. To this aim, we reached out to some autistic people, the parents of autistic children, and educators to ask them about their favorite resources about Autism. We hope these resources will help everyone understand the wide range of neurodiversity that exists in people all over the world. No two people are the same. And likewise, no two autistic people are the same. It is important to understand how differences in the brains of autistic people make it so they perceive and interact with the world in different ways.

Watch these videos. Watch them with your kids. Check out these websites. Seek a great understanding and awareness. Doing so will lead to more empathy for people with Autism. And we know that empathy leads to kindness.

When we know better, we do better.

We hope that by increasing everyone’s understanding of Autism, we can help children to feel comfortable reaching out to and connecting with people they may perceive as different. Our goal is to teach children that differences are something to celebrate, not ridicule.

Last week, a school district in Tennessee banned the book series, “Maus” from the 8th grade language arts curriculum. “Maus,” by Art Spiegelman tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler’s Europe, and his son, a cartoonist coming to terms with his father’s story. Spiegelman based his novels on real-life interviews he conducted with family members who survived the Holocaust.

This is not the first time that books sharing stories of historically marginalized and tormented groups have been banned. More and more we are seeing schools and communities that are afraid of teaching the truth of our history and unwilling to share stories with diverse characters. Books are being banned because they address racism head on; Because they have characters who are transgender, Because they depict gay or lesbian relationships. There are countless “reasons” some folks find to justify denying children the opportunity to explore the world through diverse books.
